Broadbridge Heath’s leading goalscorer Zac Young was back in the starting line-up for the trip to Sevenoaks on Easter Monday having missed the previous 6 matches through injury.
In what was a perfect day for Bank Holiday football, the sun was shining, blue sky and that strong wind we had over the weekend had dropped as the teams came out the dressing rooms at The Greatness Park Stadium.
Unfortunately the first half entertainment on the pitch didn’t live up to the idyllic setting with few chances created by either side. One notable exception for “The Oaks” in the 28th minute when Jefferson Albangbee struck a fierce right foot shot from 22 yards that Heath goalkeeper Alfie Hadfield saved at full stretch to push the ball wide of the post for a corner kick and it remained all square at the break.
The crowd didn’t have to wait long to see a goal in the second period with the home-side taking the lead within 2 minutes of the restart when Albangbee crossed the ball from the left wing into the Heath 6 yard box, Charlie Gibson tried to head the ball away but it struck his team-mate Charlie Connell and fell kindly into the path of Jed Borders who rammed it home from 8 yards to give his team the lead.
Heath’s response was immediate with Connell trying to make amends just minutes later with a right foot shot that looked to be going into the top right corner until Jordan Perrin, “The Oak’s” stopper hurled himself across the goal to deny Heath an equaliser.
Gibson took the resulting corner from the right and played the ball deep to the far post where Brad Peters powered a header back across the goal to his defensive partner Jay Richardson to steer the ball into the net for his first ever goal for “The Bears”.
Heath went on to dominate play for a while with Louis Evans trying his luck with a long range shot just wide of the post, minutes later Sal Marino’s effort saw Perrin again diving across his goal to make another good save to deny “The Bears” and then Young fired a left foot shot inches wide of the post.
Heath’s pressure final told on 79 minutes when Zac Young won the ball off a defender and went on a run towards goal before drilling a low left foot shot under the advancing Perrin for his 25th goal of the season.
The hosts threw everyone forward for the final minutes in search of an equaliser, Albangbee again in action but this time firing a right foot shot high over the crossbar and with just minute’s remaining substitute Warren-Hughes Mfula hammered a right foot shot against the Heath crossbar.
At the other end Mason Doughty broke away and hit a right foot shot that Perrin was forced to save but it was “The Bears” who held on to secure the points.
