Chris Simmons Broadbridge Heath team travelled to VCD Athletic on Saturday looking to recover from their disappointing performance last time out against Sittingbourne and after 90 minutes play that defeat was long forgotten as The Bears showed tremendous bouncebackability to come away with all 3 points in a 3-1 victory.
Simmons made five changes to the starting line-up which included Under 23 goalkeeper Stan Williamson and new on-loan signing from Bromley Yuvi Mann both starting a Bears league game for the first time.
The hosts started well and took the lead on 5 minutes when a Heath move broke down deep in the opposition half, a quick three man counter-attack from the hosts saw the ball played out wide right to Reece Deakin who in turn played it across the penalty area to Mo Kamara to slip a neat pass into the path of Alfred Evans to score from close range.
The home-side continued to have the lions share of possession but without really troubling Williamson but that all changed on 30 minutes when Heath’s Charlie Gibson went down injured and in need of medical treatment for several minutes; a chance for Heath Coach Carl Downes to call the players in. Whatever was said certainly worked when the game resumed with Heath now on the ascendency and playing much better but it remained 1-0 at the break.
Heath continued the second half as they had ended the first, looking the better side but unable to find that clinical touch in front of goal but that all changed on 72 minutes when a long Neo Wooster throw-in from the right landed inside the penalty area and flew up onto the outstretched arm of Alfred Evans, the referee was perfectly positioned to immediately blow his whistle and point to the penalty spot and Zac Young stepped up to fire a low left foot shot into the bottom right corner giving the hosts goalkeeper Mason Whitnell no chance of stopping.
Things got even better for The Bears on 83 minutes when Young robbed the ball off a defender close to the halfway line and progressed a few yards into the opposition half before lobbing the ball over the advancing Whitnell to net his 22nd goal of the season.
Heath wrapped up the game deep into injury time when Mason Doughty won the ball on the halfway line and played a long ball forward for Young to chase down, the Heath striker drove into the Athletic penalty area forced slightly wide by a defender but turned back inside onto his favoured left foot and fired a low shot that flew past Whitnell to bring home the points for The Bears.
Team: Williamson, Marino, Gibson (Wooster 55), Napper (Connell 70), Hyde, Peters, Mann, Romain, Pitcher (Doughty 64), Evans, Young.
