The Road to Wembley comes to an end.

History was made on Sunday when our first team travelled to Camberley to play in the Buildbase FA Vase against Combined Counties League side Bagshot who are ground-sharing this season with their local neighbours.

Playing a senior football match on a Sunday seemed really strange from the beginning, the last time I did that was in my youth when someone dragged me out of bed with a thumping hangover from the night before, then driving me to some god forsaken field in the middle of nowhere to play a match in the cold and wet, what happy days!

Well I think a few of our players might also have been out on the tiles the night before because our performance on the day was well below the standard we have set in recent times.

It didn’t start off too badly for The Bears who had a lot of possession and looked especially dangerous attacking down the left flank with George Cousins causing problems to the home defence with his dribbling skills and Cameron Watts putting in some smart right wing crosses.
Heath thought they’d taken the lead midway through the half when Cousins put the ball in the net but was foiled by the raised flag in the hand of the Referee’s Assistant, a decision which I’m certain would have been overturned by VAR but that’s football and you just have to get on with it.

The home side took the lead just before the break with a wonder strike from their No. 8, 25 or 30 yards out who hammered a left foot shot that crashed against Evento’s cross bar and down into the net. Heath’s hopes that this would spur them on to better things in the second period never occurred and the home-side added a 2nd when a corner from the left was whipped in to the near post and headed home by the smallest player on the pitch to sum up The Bears afternoon.

So no trip to Wembley this year and good luck to Bagshot who thoroughly deserved to go through on their performance, meanwhile Heath maintain a record of never having won a game on a Sunday.

Team: Evento, Godfrey, Watts, Tuck (Sim 85), Maxwell (Smith 70), Howard-Bold, Carney, Waddingham, Weller (Hull 60), Taylor, Cousins.
