Having already secured the division title, Heath Under 23’s penultimate league game of the season saw them travel to AFC Whyteafe on a Friday evening for a match against Lingfield U23s hoping to maintain their unbeaten league record for the remaining two matches but knowing that their hosts were not going to make it easy for them.
Heath got off to a great start taking the lead on 3 minutes when Ted Cooksley received the ball wide on the right and played a pass between two defenders to Nathan Kennedy-Tamplin who took the ball to the goal-line before driving a low pass across the face of goal, Keanin Louw’s close range shot was blocked by the goalkeeper on the line and Luke York was on it in a flash to force it home.
Heath came close to doubling their lead just minutes later when Louw received the ball some 40 yards from goal and struck a right foot shot over the stranded Lingfield goalkeeper onto the crossbar and out to safety.
Lingfield equalised midway through the half when Jordon Dartley advanced down the left flank and picked out a Lingfield player arriving late on the edge of the penalty area who placed a left foot shot wide of Heath goalkeeper Stan Williamson to bring the score level.
Things got even better for the hosts on 40 minutes when Mayson Berg sprinted down the left flank and crossed the ball to the far post where it was headed back into the danger area and turned in from close range to make it 2-1 at the break.
Both sides had chances to add to their score but it was ‘The Bears’ who drew level on 70 minutes when Luke York’s corner from the left was headed in by Ethan Cumming arriving late at the far post to head home his seventh goal of the season.
Heath completed the turnaround 10 minutes from time when Louw was brought down by a clumsy challenge in the penalty area and Harry Kent stepped up to strike a low right foot shot into the back of the net bringing his season’s tally to ten goals in 14 games.
So with one league game away to Oakwood remaining (date to be confirmed). Can ‘The Bears’ complete a league season without defeat, it would be some achievement if they do and we should know by the end of April.
Meanwhile in the U23 Challenge Cup semi-final, Heath Under 23’s will play the winners of the Arundel v Pagham match that’s being played on Thursday 16th who will then play Ferring Under 23s, date to be confirmed.
